Downspout Installation in Orlando & Central Florida
Gutters collect the water. Downspouts are what actually move it away from your home. Without properly placed downspouts and extensions, all that collected rainwater dumps right next to your foundation — exactly where it causes the most damage.
Why Downspouts Matter
Central Florida gets 50+ inches of rain per year. During a heavy storm, a typical home's roof can shed thousands of gallons of water in under an hour. That water has to go somewhere. Properly sized and positioned downspouts route it safely away from your foundation, preventing:
- Foundation erosion and settlement — Water pooling at the foundation softens the soil and can cause cracks and shifting
- Basement and crawl space moisture — Even in Florida's slab-on-grade construction, water intrusion through the slab edge causes mold and damage
- Landscape washout — Concentrated water flow from poorly placed downspouts erodes mulch, soil, and plantings
- Driveway and walkway staining — Overflow creates mineral stains and algae growth on concrete
- Siding and stucco damage — Water cascading down exterior walls causes staining, paint failure, and moisture intrusion
Our Downspout Services
New Downspout Installation
Adding downspouts where your home needs them most. We calculate drainage load based on roof area and slope, then place downspouts at optimal intervals — typically every 30-40 linear feet of gutter run, or at every low point in the gutter system.
Downspout Extensions
Extending existing downspouts to direct water further from your foundation. We recommend a minimum of 4-6 feet from the foundation wall. Options include above-ground extensions, splash blocks, and underground drainage connections.
Downspout Relocation
Moving downspouts from problematic locations — away from walkways, driveways, patios, or areas where water pools — to better discharge points.
Underground Drainage Connection
Connecting downspouts to underground drain lines that carry water to the street, a dry well, or another drainage point. This is the cleanest solution for homes where above-ground extensions aren't practical or aesthetically acceptable.
Downspout Sizing
Standard residential downspouts come in two sizes:
- 2"x3" — Standard for most single-story homes with 5-inch gutters
- 3"x4" — Recommended for larger roof areas, multi-story homes, and 6-inch gutter systems. Handles significantly more water volume.
In Central Florida's high-rainfall climate, we often recommend upgrading to 3"x4" downspouts even on single-story homes for extra capacity during heavy storms.
How Many Downspouts Does My Home Need?
As a general rule: one downspout per 30-40 feet of gutter run, plus one at every corner or low point. A typical single-story home needs 4-6 downspouts. We calculate the exact number based on your roof area and drainage needs during our free estimate.
